Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Banks

This is my version of Anita's class page from the Cardinal Colours weekend crop back in March. I was lucky enough to make at a recent crop as I had been too busy at the weekend. The photo is my great uncle Flight Lieutenant Kenneth James Banks. The title using one of the labels on the papers has been changed to bear the motto of his Squadron 'Danger is our Opportunity'.

Kenneth was 21 when he died on 29th May 1945, having survived the WWII as a pilot. He crashed his Spitfire into the stained glass window of a church in Yorkshire. The more detailed journalling is written on the tag which is hidden under the photo which acts as a pocket.

The papers are Bo Bunny's Serenade collection. I used some tiny hole-less beads on the poppy centres and some Swirlydoo butterflies, glittered up with Stickles.

Thanks for another great class Anita, and here is her super original layout.

Cake CSI #72

The famous 21st birthday cake needs to be recorded! - so it now features on two layouts (one in black and white which I can't show you yet, but will be revealed in June), and this one I have created for this week's CSI challenge (#72).

Here is what was required to crack solve the mystery this time (more details on the site):

This is what I chose to include:

The Scheme - I used all the colours
Krafted - Kraft Bazzill as by background
Bottle Green - in the Scenic Route and My Mind's Eye papers, Chalk Mist on background and the flowers (which were grey - an old Prima purchase which was gathering dust!), also the distress stain and ink used on letters (Basic Grey Chipboard alphabets stickers, painted with acrylic paint and sprayed, then inked) and numbers (American Crafts Foam Thickers).
Yellowed Pages - from the MME papers.
Olive Oil -  Also from the same papers and the leaves.
Toasted Baguette - From the papers.

Evidence - I have used:
A doily.
Book page print on the Tim Holtz paper used to create the heart.
Labels cut from the MME (The Sweetest Thing - Tangerine) Event / Place / Date details and used for hidden journalling.
Leafy vines - the Prima vine.
Drawing - I drew in white gel pen round a lacy border I made with a Martha Stewart Punch Around the Page punch set and an sheet of spare 12" x 12" paper. I also used this as a template to draw the same pattern around the heart. I drew in some black lines free hand around the border and the heart.
Metal - Book plate Tim Holtz for the '21'.
Kraft Background - Kraft Bazzill - spritzed (chalk mists) and splats (distress stains) and doodled on.rote my journalling on a series of stacked labels, cut from 'Tangello' Greetings Paper MME. They are tucked under the photo and can be pulled out to read.

Testimony - Write your journalling on a series of stacked labels.
My journalling (written on the labels and tucked under the photo) tells of the day we celebrated the triplet's 21st birthday - 31.03.13. The photo only shows the girls as Andrew is away in America.  We were at my brother's flat and he made a lovely lunch for us all (he is also waiting for his lovely Elaine to get home from Brazil). The cake I made was in 7 layers, each one a different colour of the rainbow, so it was very tall, and covered in a white icing. I also made a second lactose free cake for Emily.

I want to ride my {sister's} bicycle

It's some time since I made a layout with more than one photograph, but I was inspired to have a go at this week's CSI challenge. It's also quite a while since I had time to take part in a CSI challenge. I find these challenges excellent for making me use up my existing stash and for mixing papers from different collections. It is more of a challenge when I'm away from home and have limited papers etc. with me, but more time to take part.

Here is the case file (71) we were challenged to solve as a scrapbook page.

Colour Scheme - All colours used:
Summer Sun - Yellow Bo Bunny Barefoot & Bliss papers, buttons.
Cheery Cherry - Baby clothes in photo, paper from Magnolia, buttons, Basic Grey letter stickers, nail head stickers, twine.
White Whistle - Bazzill Glazed Cardstock, white Bazzill.
Blue Birds of Happiness - Bo Bunny papers as above, papers from October Afternoon Farm Girl collection, Tattered Angles Glimmer Mist - Bell Bottom Jeans, buttons.
Concrete - Tattered Angles Glimmer Mist - Black Magic, Basic Grey letter stickers, Basic Grey papers from Scarlet Letter collection.

Evidence -
*Circles - photos and Sizzix doily and doily border dies
*Birds (on Glazed Bazzill)
*Ink splatters - Glimmer Mists
*Fiber/Twine - American Crafts Premium Ribbon
*Doodling/pen work - Doodling around letters, tag and shapes

Testimony - Song title - The one and only Queen – “I want to ride my bicycle” with a twist to suit the photos.

Journalling - The tag pulls out and contains the story of the bike and my my brother (in the photos)  eventually inheriting it from me and my sister. I remember going to buy the bicycle with my father and choosing it at the bike shop in Penge High Street. The photos were taken in 1969 and were colour slides which have been converted.

This challenge runs until Sunday 19th May.

Pilot

Another layout for Andrew's album. I used this crop kit from Papermaze (November 2012). The photo shows Andrew in the cockpit of a Tiger Moth. We surprised my Dad with a flight for his 70th birthday and we all went along to Redhill Aerodrome to watch him fly. Well we saw him take off and land but in between he was nowhere to be seen! Once he returned to land, the instructor allowed all the grandchildren to have a turn sitting in the cockpit.

The papers are Pink Paislee's Portfolio collection - Stupendous, Outstanding and Unbelievable. American Crafts' Ready Set Go Surrounded Kraft. The kit also contained natural hemp, bakers twine and vellum.

I added some Liquid Pearls to the stars and some flat backed pearls to the left mat. I also used some Queen and Co. and Tim Holtz washi tape. The title was made which some stickers I have had for a long time and I don't know who made them. I also splashed on some distress stain in Iced Spruce.

Me & My Girls

This is what I made with this month's Papermaze Crop Kit. The page was designed by Vanessa and was a great excuse to try the new Ranger Distress Paints by creating a water colour effect. The paint colours were perfect for this photo of Emily, Catherine and me taken on their 21st birthday.

The Background was created with the paint and water and left to dry. The circle was hand drawn with a few dots of Liquid Pearls added here and there.

I cut my five flowers on the Cricut with the Flower Shoppe cart, a random selection of flowers in different sizes until I had enough. These were all cut from white Bazzill. they were then inked with the same colour as one of the paints, but in Distress Ink, and spritzed with water, screwed up, dried out and opened out again. Then they were layered up and a clear dew drop added to the centre. The smaller flowers are spiral flowers which were also cut on the Cricut, and coloured in the same way. Some were cut from a piece of Basic Grey Kissing Booth Lip Lock paper. The leaves were cut from two shades of green Bazzill with Memory Box and Marianne dies.

I inked the Prima butterfly which started off a beige colour. I used my wired twine to made spirals and tucked them in amongst the flowers. The mutli-coloured strips of patterned papers are cut from a sheet of Pink Paisley paper, She Art collection - Soar. The photo mount is cut from Marigold paper from the Ambrosia collection by Bo Bunny.

My title was had written and 'GIRLS' was cut with the Alphalicious cartridge on the Cricut.

Here is Vanessa's original layout:

Happy Anniversary To Us!

This month over on the Scrapology Blog the card challenge set by Alison is to make a card using up some of your old stash. These papers, stickers and tag are all from Basic Grey's 'Urban Couture' collection.  I used this line a lot over the years, and it's still one I love - especially some of there green / brown swirly patterned papers. These cute little birds are from the 'Create a Critter' Cricut cartridge.

This was made for our 29th wedding anniversary on 5th May, but had to keep it off the blog until today's challenge was posted.

Thanks for looking and please pop over to Scrapology for more details of the challenge.

Photoshoot

I am enjoying scrapping some pictures of Catherine taken at a recent photo shoot she had in London. I wanted to pick out the pale turquoise reflected in the metallic background, the black and white of her dress and just a touch of red for her belt.

I used a sheet of white Bazzill which as a glazed leaf pattern on it and spritzed it with inks and mists in black and turquoise. I trimmed the edges by about an inch then cut into it with a Martha Stewart border punch, then distressed the edges before mounting it onto paper.

The papers are all basic grey, the black background paper is from the old 'Black Tie' collection while the others are all from the newer 'Lucille' collection. The scroll is cut with a Sizzix die and the words are various rub ons. There is a little washi tape, some lace, ribbon  and some gems and pearls.

The picture wheel is one from a large collection I have that dates back to when we were children, and has been added to when my children were small. I wanted to include one and was going to use my sizzix die but found this damaged one in the box so decided to use the real thing as only a mall part of it would show.

More inspiration from Heather Jacob went into this page.

Spit & Polish

This lovely old photo of my Dad as a little boy in his mother's arms. He looks like he has been playing in the back yard and made himself all mucky. Love the washing drying on the line behind them. Nan's apron and Dad's shoes really date the picture. I created this layout while at Debden and we debated a good title for it - someone came up with 'Spit and Polish' - Looks like my Nan is about to get her hankie out of her apron pocket, spit on it and wipe his face clean!

I asked my Dad about this photo and he said it was taken when they were living in a flat in Blandford Road in Beckenham in around 1935.

I used Basic Grey's Serenade papers. A sheet of 'Half Penny' was used for the background and this was treated with a little texture paste and spritzed with shimmer mists and some black ink. I also added splodges of distress stain here and there. The edges were inked with distress ink. The layers are all scraps from other layout I have made using the same paper collection.

The blossoms are a mixed selection from my stash, and the wooden fern leaves are from Prima. My title alphabet is a chipboard one from American Crafts. I added a little twine, some flat-backed pearls and some Stickles.

A Mother's Love

Look at those rosy cheeks! This was me with my mother in our home in Beckenham in the 1960's. I love the details in this photo, the tea tray set with pot, jug, cups and saucers, even a small vase of flowers. Lovely to look back and remember the clothes and wall paper etc.

I was inspired to use these colours when I saw a layout by the talented Heather Jacob. I have used Kaisercraft Periwinkle collection - hint, shimmer and secret. Also from Kaisercraft I used a Charlotte's Dream rub on for the border, 'A Mother's Love' was another rub on from the sheet called 'Mother'. I made two crochet flowers adding buttons and thread.

The right side border is a spiral notebook punch, and more punches were used for the label shapes. I used a few blossoms from Wild Orchid Crafts and a Tim Holtz book plate.  The chipboard flourish and chicken wire are both by Dusty Attic.

In the background I have used some picket fence distress stain and a Prima stamp with a white ink pad. A thick card tag was used for the title and a few gems were added to the flourish.

I had fun creating this page while away at Debden last month.

Photo Shoot

My daughter Catherine had a photo shoot recently, and I took some of the images to our recent scrpbooking retreat at Debden. I thought the colours in this photo looked good with the papers in the '75 cents' collection by Kaisercraft. I was inspired by a layout by Emilie Chamel.

I used some flowers from Wild Orchid Crafts, and some white ribbon roses I have had in my stash for a long time. There are three black flat-backed pearls. The other elements were all cut from the papers or the sticker sheet. A few splats of distress stain and some stickles to finish off.

Garden Girls

A photo I recently converted from colour slide of my mother and me in the garden at home in Beckenham about 1963.

This was my second Scrapology Design Team layout for this month's challenge. It was made in a similar way to the first but I used papers from the Webster's Pages 'Park Drive' collection, white Bazzill and green sewing thread.

I added a lot of flowers and leaves all from Wild Orchid Crafts. The butterflies are cut with a Martha Stewart punch. My title is a green chipboard Thickers alphabet from American Crafts.

I also used some deep white cotton crochet lace and some clear dew drops.
The challenge was to use hand stitching and we are scraplifting this pretty, fresh looking layout by Delaina Farr Burns.
This is out sketch.

Playtime Butterflies

Here is one of the layouts I made at our retreat in Debden last weekend.

The triplets at play in the park. This layout was designed using the Cricut Craft Room programme. I picked the butterfly shadow from the Designer's Calendar cartridge. I repeated the image across the page then copied the rows so they were exactly where I wanted them. Then cut them from White Bazzill. This was trimmed down to leave a narrow border of the green Bazzill underneath. I used lots of pretty scraps of Doodlebug Designs Inc. papers and positioned them on the lime card stock so each one would show through a butterfly aperture.

The white was layered up with a lot of 3D foam tape. Some of the cut outs butterflies were inked and curved and added to the layout, just sticking them down by the bodies. Each one has two layers, and flower stamen to make antenna. I made a trail of flat backed pink gems between the butterflies. The ribbon was trailed loosely across the bottom of the page just sticking it down in a few places. and pegged to the photo.

The title was an old Making Memories rub-on which I have had for years.

This was inspired by a beautiful Studio Calico layout I saw on by Wilna Furstenburg.

Farm Girl

October Afternoon's Farm Girl papers were the perfect papers for this photo of Emily when she was 2 years old (October 1994). We were at Stone Lodge Farm. My hidden journalling tells of how we all went to the children's farm with our friends Deborah and Richard and their girls Jennifer and Helen. Emily was really taken with the idea of visiting a farm and even took her farm picture book along with her.

This is the design team layout I made for May's Scrapology Challenge - 'H is for Hand Stitching'.
We are scraplifting this pretty, fresh looking layout by Delaina Farr Burns.

 Here is our sketch:
Here is what I used and did:
October Afternoon, Farm Girl Papers - Rose Trellis, Berry Basket, Patchwork, Pie Tin & Mason Jar
  Cream Puff Bazzill
  Wired mulberry paper flowers
DMC embroidery stranded cotton 931, needle, Sew Easy tool
Technique Tuesday square template
  Decorative leaf pins
Sizzix die

Cut cream card so it measures 11" x 11",  with pencil, use Technique Tuesday square template to draw two squares overlapping each other in the centre.

Create holes for stitching using a large needle or the 'Sew Easy' tool.  Rub away pencil lines. Back stitch around both squares with 3 strands of the DMC thread.

Gut yellow dot side of Rose trellis paper to make a 1" frame 12" x 12".
Mount card centrally over frame.

Cut a piece of 'Pie Tin' paper 2" x 7 1/4", 'Berry Basket' 4" x 7" and a scalloped square piece from 'Mason Jar' paper using the acetate template. Distress and ink all the edges.
Lay these into position and stick in place.

Mount the 4" x 6" photo in place over the papers.

Turn the top right corner of the denim paper over to show the flowers side, place a few 3D foam pads underneath, and stick a little yellow wired flower over the point. Add a leaf cut from the 'Rose Trellis' paper.

From the 1" strips of card left over cut some lacy shapes with the Sizzix die. You will only get the top of this shape, but it's all you need! tuck the shapes either side of the photo.

The photo is of my daughter at the Farm so I used the manufacturer's strip to create my title. 'Farm Girl' and 'October Afternoon' were perfect! Create your own title using left over papers.

Cut a few flowers from the 'Rose Trellis' paper and arrange on the layout, some flat and others on 3D foam.  Cut the centres from a few more flowers and add these over a few of the flowers on the page. Cut a few leaf stems and arrange these around the flowers. Also cut a few leaves to use on their own without the stems.

Arrange the wired flowers on the layout and stick down.

Place the decorative pins, sticking them through the 3D foam pads to hold them in position.

Please pop over to Scrapology for details of the challenge and the prize.
